Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.
Examine evidence for this Technician objective. Minimum standard: Ability.
Examine your task
Explain how the drawing and words suited the audience and how understanding was checked.
Choose work where the contribution is yours and a record supports the account. Give structural context, then focus on your part. Explain who supplied design information, what you could decide and what needed checking. Keep claims proportional to the work.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: a clarification for a non-specialist
I am a good communicator.
I marked the affected detail, explained the unresolved interface clearly and recorded the clarification required. I checked that the response reached the people using the drawing.
This is an original teaching example, not an assessed submission, official model answer or real project record.
Evidence and reflection
Consider a sketch or correspondence extract and response. Identify the revision, relevant location and contribution. Explain what it demonstrates and its limits. Obtain sharing permission and retain engineering context after redaction.
Discuss one uncertain part with a mentor. Ask them to question your reasoning and the scope of the check. Record what you now understand and what needs further work.
Questions to ask yourself
- How did you know the message was understood?
Explain a particular event and its reasoning.
- Which requirement does this demonstrate?
Compare it with official wording.
- What experience remains missing?
Agree a practical action and review date.
Practical exercise
Annotate a permitted item and explain its relevance in a short note. Ask a colleague to identify your role from the note alone. Revise unclear wording and add it to the objective index. Keep an example as development evidence if it does not yet reach the required standard.
