ISTRUCTE / Professional Review Interview

TIStructE interview, if required

Prepare to discuss your work against the objectives specified by the panel.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

Prepare to discuss your work against the objectives specified by the panel.

Confirm the scope

The initial assessment determines whether an interview is required. It can concern selected objectives or all eleven. Read the invitation and Technician guidance. Another grade’s examination timetable or assessment format should not be assumed to apply.

Prepare your explanation

  1. 01

    Revisit the submission

Locate each example in the exact file and revisit the reasoning.

  2. 02

    Prepare the presentation

Explain roles, development and contributions using relevant work. Rehearse within the specified format.

  3. 03

    Practise discussion

Ask a mentor to challenge assumptions, checks and limits. Explain a structural feature with a sketch.

  4. 04

    Test arrangements

Check audio, screen sharing and navigation. Request adjustments in advance.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. How does this structure work?

Explain the load path or behaviour relevant to your task.

  2. Why did the detail change?

Discuss the issue, action and authorised response.

  3. What did the check establish?

    Identify its result and limits.

  4. What would you refer?

Show the boundary of your competence.

During the discussion

Answer from your own understanding. Ask for clarification when needed. If you do not know a detail, explain what you would check rather than inventing it. Use the portfolio to support discussion without reading a script.

Keep authorship and approval clear. You can explain a design decision affecting your work while accurately stating who made it. Reviewers need to understand your own competence.

Use feedback

Record the result and any objectives requiring further work. The guidance distinguishes limited-objective and full resits, with applicable time limits. Follow the formal decision and ask about uncertainty. Update evidence only when it reflects actual development, and agree practical actions with a mentor.
