LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

Record learning that keeps structural technical practice current.

Connect learning with responsibility

Plan from work and recognised gaps. A new material, workflow, construction method or safety concern may create a need. Include communication, conduct and information control where they affect practice. Describe learning in your words and retain a reflection.

Build the habit

  1. 01

    Identify a need

Write a specific question about practice.

  2. 02

    Choose learning

Use relevant, current reading, discussion, courses or supervised experience.

  3. 03

    Record understanding

Explain the learning and effective time without counting routine repetition.

  4. 04

    Apply and review

Describe use or a planned check, limitations and the next question.

Engineering example

Illustrative setting: a structural safety report

THIN ACCOUNT

Read a safety article.

MORE USEFUL ACCOUNT

I compared a report about unclear interface information with a detail I was preparing. I discussed responsibility information with the engineer and improved the issue note after review. I will check handover requirements on the next package.

Reading alone does not establish competence. Explain what changed in your understanding.

Before and after election

During IPD, retain a plan and learning records. Continue afterwards and follow mandatory reporting instructions, including those for newly elected members. Keep records ready instead of reconstructing them only after a request.

A certificate confirms attendance; reflection explains understanding. Record hours accurately and avoid double-counting. Contact the institution about personal circumstances rather than inventing entries.

Annual review

For personal preparation. Ticking these checks does not confirm competence or eligibility.
