Develop with a mentor and keep records showing progress against Technician objectives.
Your role
You organise development and records. The mentor helps examine experience, identify gaps and agree a plan. Connect technical production with structural understanding: discuss why a detail is arranged as it is, review a construction sequence or check the basis of a schedule.
Maintain the record
- 01
Capture work regularly
Note tasks, questions, feedback and references while fresh. A diary can help prepare quarterly reports.
- 02
Review with the mentor
Discuss evidence against the current objectives and required standards.
- 03
Update the plan
Agree work or learning, support and a review date. Keep CPD reflections alongside project learning.
- 04
Prepare final documents
The current guidance requires mentor-signed final forms, quarterly reports, progress summaries and the portfolio. Follow complete application instructions.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: reinforcement detailing
I produced drawings and made progress.
I prepared a detail from design information, investigated congestion at a lap and raised it for review. I revised the detail after the response and checked the schedule. My mentor asked me to explain the lap and construction tolerances. I need further supervised buildability experience.
This distinguishes completed work, feedback and a remaining need.
Working with a mentor
The guidance describes an experienced member or someone of equivalent standing, with experience appropriate to the objectives. If support is unavailable at work, ask the institution or a Regional Group for advice. Agree meeting frequency and what to bring. A mentor needs enough understanding to challenge the work constructively.
If jobs or mentors change, retain permitted records and agree a handover. Ask IStructE about uncertain signatures before applying. Do not present informal conversations as a formal supervision history.
Meeting preparation
For personal preparation. Ticking these checks does not confirm competence or eligibility.
Before application
Compare final claims with quarterly records and work history. Use the portfolio guide to test references and readability. Agree how outstanding gaps will be addressed rather than signing unsupported completion claims.
