Confirm qualification or apprenticeship requirements for Technician Membership.
Check the foundation for this grade
The Technician membership page identifies an approved Level 3 qualification in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, Level 6 in Scotland, or equivalent; an Advanced or Modern Apprenticeship, or equivalent, is another stated foundation. Ask IStructE about the award you hold and its framework. Comparing level numbers between countries does not establish equivalence.
Prepare an eligibility enquiry
- 01
Identify the award
Record its full title, awarding body, country and completion date. Distinguish a qualification from employer training.
- 02
Locate the evidence
Find certificates and transcripts. Ask what alternatives are needed if documents are unavailable or the award title has changed.
- 03
Describe your work
Provide a short factual account of relevant experience. A job title alone does not demonstrate competence.
- 04
Retain the response
Record what was confirmed and any remaining action. Informal advice and a completed assessment may have different status.
Education and development
A qualification can establish a learning foundation. IPD demonstrates how your work meets the Technician objectives. A completed award does not establish all eleven areas of competence. Years of employment do not confirm acceptance of the academic base. Address both questions using the appropriate evidence.
Once the foundation is clear, choose an IPD arrangement suited to your records and support. Seek opportunities to understand the structural decisions represented by your work.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: an overseas diploma
My diploma is equivalent to a UK award.
I sent IStructE the award title and transcript and asked it to confirm the Technician route. I retained the response and additional information requested with my planning records.
The institution determines equivalence. Establish it from evidence before relying on it.
Foundation questions
For personal preparation. Ticking these checks does not confirm competence or eligibility.
Questions to ask yourself
- What is confirmed in writing?
Identify unresolved conditions before planning submission.
- What work will develop structural understanding?
Ask a mentor to connect learning with technical tasks.
