Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.
Examine evidence for this Technician objective. Minimum standard: Appreciation.
Examine your task
Explain effects on resources, time and contractual scope. Distinguish technical input from commercial authority.
Choose work where the contribution is yours and a record supports the account. Give structural context, then focus on your part. Explain who supplied design information, what you could decide and what needed checking. Keep claims proportional to the work.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: a drawing scope change
I understand project costs.
I identified the additional drawings affected, estimated the technical work and referred the scope question before going beyond the instruction.
This is an original teaching example, not an assessed submission, official model answer or real project record.
Evidence and reflection
Consider a permitted scope query or resource estimate. Identify the revision, relevant location and contribution. Explain what it demonstrates and its limits. Obtain sharing permission and retain engineering context after redaction.
Discuss one uncertain part with a mentor. Ask them to question your reasoning and the scope of the check. Record what you now understand and what needs further work.
Questions to ask yourself
- Who could authorise the scope change?
Explain a particular event and its reasoning.
- Which requirement does this demonstrate?
Compare it with official wording.
- What experience remains missing?
Agree a practical action and review date.
Practical exercise
Annotate a permitted item and explain its relevance in a short note. Ask a colleague to identify your role from the note alone. Revise unclear wording and add it to the objective index. Keep an example as development evidence if it does not yet reach the required standard.
