In this guide
Use this guidance to plan your learning. ICE and IStructE set and assess the requirements for their own routes.
Prepare the written account
Use a small number of strong examples. Make your responsibility visible, structure your evidence against current instructions and check the consistency of your CV, reports and supporting documents.
Practise the conversation
Speak through a design decision without a script. Explain alternatives, uncertainty, professional implications and the point at which you sought review.
Follow your institution’s assessment process
ICE Professional Review and IStructE Professional Review Interview and examination are distinct. Dates, formats, documents and rules can change. Read current publisher guidance before planning a submission.
Reflect on the outcome
Whether the result is positive or not, review feedback honestly and decide what to develop next.
Readiness before rehearsal.
Check eligibility, current submission instructions and the quality of your evidence before practising an interview. Select project examples you can defend under questioning. For each one, explain the issue, your authority, technical checks, alternatives, safety and ethical implications, outcome and reflection.
- Compare your written account with your CV and development record.
- Ask another engineer to challenge decisions and assumptions.
- Prepare to discuss a weak outcome or a decision you would now revise.
- Confirm the current documents, dates and format with your institution.
