PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT / SHARED PRACTICE

Initial Professional Development

Plan work that develops your competence. Discuss progress with a mentor or supervisor and record decisions while the details are fresh.

SHARED GUIDANCE

Use this guidance to plan your learning. ICE and IStructE set and assess the requirements for their own routes.

Begin with a route

During IPD, you develop through work and supervision, then review what you have learned. ICE and IStructE have different routes and recording requirements. Choose the grade and route you intend to pursue before organising the evidence.

Make a development plan

Compare your experience with the current requirements for your route. Identify areas with limited evidence and discuss opportunities to develop them with a mentor or supervisor.

Record your decisions

Keep a weekly or quarterly record of your role and the decisions you made. Note the options, checks and outcome, with a short reflection. Writing promptly helps preserve details you may need at review.

Review progress

Use periodic conversations to test whether your experience shows the level of responsibility and judgement expected for your route. Be honest about areas where you have only observed work.
