Mentoring an EngTech candidate

Use practical work and feedback to agree a manageable development plan.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.

Use practical work and feedback to agree a manageable development plan.

For the candidate

Bring a short annotated work record. Explain your responsibility, checks and where you needed help. Identify the attribute you think it supports and ask your mentor to test that judgement.

Agree opportunities within your role: joining an inspection, checking a quantity schedule or investigating a technical query under suitable supervision. Ask your employer for an appropriate task where current work leaves a genuine gap.

A workable meeting

  1. 01

    Review the last action

What was completed and what did it show? If it did not happen, agree a different opportunity.

  2. 02

    Examine one work item

Discuss the method, units, assumptions, checks and outcome. Identify decisions that belonged to others.

  3. 03

    Test coverage

Compare the account with current EngTech requirements. Distinguish practical experience from general knowledge.

  4. 04

    Agree the next action

Record a task, supervision, target date and evidence to retain.

For the mentor

Ask why a method was appropriate and what would make it unsuitable. Test whether the candidate recognises limits in their authority. Separate an unclear explanation from missing experience: editing cannot supply work that was never undertaken.

Ask the candidate to explain the task without the drawing, then use the drawing to examine the detail. Identify what remains unsupported and what needs practice. Review a revised account without writing it for them.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. What did you decide yourself?

Ask where a question was referred and why.

  2. How was the result checked?

Look for a check relevant to the task.

  3. What changed after feedback?

Identify a change in practice or unfinished action.

Record the discussion

Use the gap-review worksheet to capture evidence, the gap and the next opportunity. These are learning records. The Forum does not sign off IPD or decide readiness on ICE’s behalf.
