Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.
Check how qualifications and practical experience support an ICE Technician application.
What needs to be established
ICE needs to be satisfied that you understand the engineering you apply. Its Technician guidance allows suitably experienced applicants without an approved qualification, with greater attention to technical understanding demonstrated through work. A degree is not compulsory, and a qualification does not remove the need for practical evidence.
Clarify your position
- 01
List what you hold
Record the full award title, awarding body, completion date and apprenticeship assessment. Distinguish completed awards from study in progress.
- 02
Ask about approval
Use ICE’s current advice. For an uncertain qualification, send the details to ICE and ask what it needs. Keep the response rather than relying on a colleague’s experience.
- 03
Connect learning with work
Choose tasks where you selected a recognised method, understood its limits and checked the result. Explain units, drawings and tolerances in the context of your role.
- 04
Resolve missing evidence
Ask ICE which alternative evidence it accepts if a record is unavailable. Do not reconstruct certificates or describe an unfinished award as complete.
Engineering example
Illustrative setting: checking setting-out information
I know how to use the software.
I checked the drawing revision and coordinate reference before importing the points. I compared a known dimension with the source drawing, investigated a unit mismatch and issued the corrected schedule through our checking procedure. The engineer checked it before use.
This explains the method and checks while keeping approval responsibility clear. It is not an approved application answer.
Without an approved qualification
Prepare to explain the principles behind your routine methods. For a measurement task, consider the reference system and accuracy needed. For a drawing task, explain how dimensions relate to the structural arrangement and construction sequence. If you cannot explain why a method is appropriate, seek supervised learning before claiming competence.
The attributes and evidence guides help organise the material. They do not provide an academic assessment or decide equivalence.
