Understand the EngTech route, build an account of your own technical work and prepare for the Technician Professional Review.

Who this guide is for

Use this guide if your work involves applying established engineering methods to practical problems in civil or infrastructure engineering. Your job title alone does not determine eligibility. Look at the work you carry out, the decisions you make and the responsibility you accept. Drawing, site and inspection technicians may have quite different examples to discuss.

EngTech is professional registration with the Engineering Council. MICE is ICE membership. Qualification through ICE brings these together as EngTech MICE. The Forum provides learning guidance; ICE decides whether an application meets its standards.

Work through the route

  1. 01

    Check your foundation

Read Technical foundation. ICE accepts suitably experienced candidates with or without approved qualifications. Establish which evidence applies to your circumstances.

  2. 02

    Develop and record practice

Use the seven EngTech attribute areas to examine your work. Identify examples showing a method, your checks, safe working and an outcome.

  3. 03

    Prepare the application

Read Application and sponsors. Use the Technician form and current instructions. Assemble your own account, supporting examples and CPD records with suitable sponsors.

  4. 04

    Prepare for the discussion

The Technician Review examines your practical work against EngTech attributes. Practise explaining the engineering behind your examples.

  5. 05

    Continue developing

Keep your learning and practice current after qualification. Use the EngTech CPD guide to plan and reflect on learning.

Apprenticeships and recognised routes

Some apprenticeships assessed by ICE can lead to EngTech MICE without a further membership assessment. Ask ICE about the particular apprenticeship standard and assessment you completed. Completion of a course or employment on an apprenticeship does not by itself establish that this arrangement applies. Retain written confirmation with your route records.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. What can I explain beyond my job description?

Choose a task where your own contribution is clear.

  2. Which attribute is supported only by a claim?

Find the work record or plan the missing experience.

  3. What does ICE still need to confirm?

Separate eligibility questions from a personal learning plan.

A useful first meeting

Take a short work history, representative records and your questions to a mentor. Ask them to examine one example in detail. Use the evidence worksheet to capture what remains unclear. Agree a practical next task and a review date.
