Why it matters

Continue learning after recognition so your competence keeps pace with your work.

What you will understand

  • Plan learning from new responsibilities and emerging risk.
  • Support others while keeping formal responsibilities clear.
  • Use CPD and project review to test whether competence remains current.

Core material

After recognition, work becomes more complex and the consequences of judgement can grow. Keep asking where your competence ends, seek peer review for unfamiliar work and share lessons that others can use. Record both technical and professional development, including how learning changed decisions.

Engineering example

A new role may involve approving work outside your prior specialism. An honest development plan includes specialist input and a staged transfer of responsibility.

Reflection questions

  1. Which new responsibility most stretches your competence?
  2. Who could learn from a decision you have revisited?

Practical exercise

Write a six-month learning plan with one technical topic, one professional practice topic and a real opportunity to apply each.
