Why it matters

Knowing your intended route helps you plan relevant work and find the requirements that apply.

What you will understand

  • Separate professional registration from membership and from day-to-day learning.
  • Identify the institution and grade relevant to your work.
  • Know which questions only the institution can answer.

Core material

Professional recognition is a decision made through licensed institutions. The Forum can help you understand the language, compare pathways and prepare useful questions. It cannot confirm your eligibility or sign off your development. Start with your education, experience and intended grade, then check the live route published by ICE or IStructE.

Engineering example

If your degree route is uncertain, put that question to the institution early. More project experience does not answer an unresolved academic eligibility question.

Reflection questions

  1. Which institution and grade are you considering, and why?
  2. What is confirmed in writing and what remains an assumption?

Practical exercise

Create a one-page route record with your intended grade, educational-base position, development route and three open questions. Mark the source and date of each answer.
