Further learning

Plan the learning needed to meet the full educational requirement.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

Further learning allows you to complete the educational requirement where an accredited qualification meets it only in part. It requires a programme of learning.

When Further Learning is needed

An accredited bachelor's degree commonly provides part of the Chartered educational base. Further Learning supplies the additional depth required by the framework. The learning must be assessed, so confirm how that assessment will be completed before choosing a course or activity.

Approaching it sensibly

  1. 01

    Confirm you need it

Get IStructE's written view of where your qualification stands. Some candidates start a master's degree they did not need; others assume they are fine and discover otherwise while assembling an application.

  2. 02

Choose learning that also strengthens your evidence

If you are going to spend a year or more studying, choose subject matter that also fills a thin Core Objective: sustainability, materials, or a structural specialism you intend to write about.

  3. 03

Record it as CPD as you go

Record Further Learning in your CPD record, including what you learned and how it benefited your work.

  4. 04

Do not treat it as sequential

Further learning and your IPD run in parallel. Waiting until you have finished studying before recording evidence wastes years of perfectly good experience.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Has IStructE told me I need this, or am I assuming?

Both errors are common, and both are expensive in different ways.

  2. Will this study also close a Core Objective gap?

A year of study can do two jobs. Choosing the subject with that in mind costs nothing.
