Checking where your degree stands

Check the accreditation status of your exact course and year.

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.

Accreditation confirms that a qualification meets the educational requirement for a stated registration level. Check the specific course, institution and entry or award years covered.

What to check

Confirm the exact course, cohort and registration level. Courses at the same university can have different accreditation, and a course can meet one level without meeting another.

Accreditation covers defined cohorts. Current accreditation may differ from the position when you graduated.

An accredited bachelor's degree commonly meets the Chartered requirement in part, with Further Learning covering the remainder. This reflects the framework's expected depth for Chartered registration.

What to establish, and who holds the answer

QuestionWhere the answer lives
Was my exact course accredited, for my year of award? The Joint Board of Moderators and Engineering Council accreditation records, and IStructE's own membership team.
Accredited to which level?Check the records against the educational requirements for the Incorporated or Chartered grade you intend to pursue.
Does it fully meet the requirement, or partially?IStructE. A partial match points you towards further learning rather than an academic assessment.
What if my qualification is from outside the UK?IStructE. Depending on the country and any agreement in place it may be recognised, or need an individual assessment.
What if I qualified through an apprenticeship?IStructE and your training provider. Apprenticeship routes carry their own end-point assessment arrangements alongside the academic award.

The Forum deliberately does not reproduce these records. They change, and a stale copy would be worse than none.

How to establish your position

Look for

  • Ask IStructE in writing, and keep the reply.
  • Ask before you invest years in evidence, not while you are assembling an application.
  • Ask again if you later move from Incorporated to Chartered: the requirement is different.
  • Keep certificates, transcripts and any accreditation statement together in one place.

Watch for

  • Assume that because a colleague from your course qualified, you will.
  • Rely on a course marketing page, which may describe current accreditation rather than yours.
  • Assume an unaccredited qualification is fatal. It usually means an assessment, not a dead end.
  • Leave it to the end. It is the one item that can move your plans by a year.
