Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with IStructE before applying.
IStructE assesses your academic base separately from your professional competence. Confirm that your learning meets the requirement for your intended grade early, because resolving a shortfall can take months.
Why this comes first
Three reasons, and all of them are about time.
It gates everything. You can have ten years of excellent structural engineering behind you and still not be able to apply, because a question about your degree has never been resolved.
Every remedy is slow. Further learning is a genuine programme of study. An academic assessment is a formal submission. The Technical Report Route is a substantial piece of written work in its own right. None of these is a fortnight's work.
The answer is often better than people fear. A great many engineers assume they have a problem and do not. Asking costs an email.
So the advice is unglamorous: find out where you stand now, in writing, even if you have no intention of applying for another three years.
The four ways of satisfying it
- 01
An accredited qualification
A degree accredited to the level required for the grade you want. Accreditation attaches to a specific course, at a specific institution, for specific years: not to a university's general reputation. See checking your degree.
- 02
An accredited qualification plus further learning
Where an accredited degree meets the requirement only in part (most commonly a bachelor's degree against the Chartered requirement) further learning makes up the difference. See further learning.
- 03
An individual academic assessment
Where your qualification is not accredited, or was awarded outside the UK and is not covered by a recognition arrangement, IStructE can assess it against the requirement. See academic assessment.
- 04
The Technical Report Route
For engineers whose experience is there but whose academic qualifications are not. You demonstrate the underpinning knowledge through a technical report instead. See the Technical Report Route.

Questions to ask yourself
- Has IStructE ever confirmed my academic base in writing, for the grade I want?
A colleague's reassurance is not confirmation. Applications are held up on exactly this, and the confirmation is worth keeping.
- Am I relying on an assumption about accreditation?
Accreditation changes over time. The year of award matters as much as the course name, and it cuts both ways.
- If there is a shortfall, how long will fixing it take?
Months to years, depending on the route. Knowing early is the entire point of resolving this first.
