ICE / Attributes and evidence

The seven attribute areas

Read the seven attribute areas and compare the Incorporated and Chartered expectations.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.

ICE sets out professional competence and commitment in seven attribute areas. Both reviewers must agree that you have met every area at the level for which you are applying.

Using the attribute standard

The seven areas contain twenty-seven statements at Incorporated level. Fourteen have an additional clause at Chartered level. Read them against examples of your own work to understand what each requires.

ICE asks you to write a narrative from your role activities instead of addressing the attributes in sequence. Explain the work and your decisions so reviewers can assess the relevant competence.

Once you have a draft, check its coverage against the full list. The evidence matrix and gap analysis can help with this check.

The seven areas

AreaWhat it is really asking
1Understanding and Practical Application of EngineeringThat you know your engineering, that you use it to solve real problems, and that you make judgements of your own rather than passing every decision upwards.
2Management and LeadershipThat you can plan and run work, use people and resources well, and help others get better at what they do.
3Commercial AbilityThat you understand money and contracts well enough to make sound engineering decisions inside them, and that you have handled a budget yourself.
4Health, Safety and WelfareThat you know the law and the hazards, that you manage risk in your own work rather than delegating it to a form, and that people are safer because of decisions you made.
5Sustainable DevelopmentExplain how sustainability affected the decision, including consequences across the asset’s life.
6Interpersonal Skills and CommunicationThat you can explain engineering clearly to whoever needs to understand it, in writing and out loud, and that you work well with people.
7Professional CommitmentThat you behave ethically, know where your competence ends, keep learning, and give something back to the profession.

Using the attribute guides

Each guide includes the cited and dated official statements, an explanation of the area, the Chartered extensions and questions for reviewing your experience. Examples from different parts of the industry show how evidence can be explained, followed by questions that may help with interview preparation.

The two worked examples on each page are fictional. Use them to compare the reasoning and clarity of the accounts. Write your submission from your own work; see the ethics page.
