Scenario lab

Discuss changing conditions, professional responsibility and engineering judgement.

LEARNING GUIDE

Use this material to examine your own work. Confirm current requirements, forms and dates with ICE before applying.

Explore how an engineering situation changes after a decision. The exercise develops your reasoning beyond recalling an answer to a multiple-choice question.

Your first move determines what information you have when the second decision arrives. Stopping the works before establishing what has changed and establishing what has changed before stopping the works both end up somewhere defensible: by different routes, at different costs, in front of different people. That is the lesson, and it cannot be taught by a question with an answer.

Each scenario ends with a debrief covering what information you needed, your authority, the risk, the communication, the documentation, escalation and professional responsibility.
