Reinforced Concrete Design / module 7

Reinforcement detailing and buildability

Everything the strength calculation never asks: whether the bars fit, whether the concrete can get round them, and whether the effective depth is what you assumed.

What you will understand

  • Explain why detailing decides whether a correct calculation produces a sound structure
  • Compute the effective depth to the centroid when bars go into more than one layer
  • Apply the deemed-to-satisfy crack-control rules, and know that either route suffices
  • Judge congestion, and say what to change when a detail cannot be built
  • Curtail bars correctly, and recognise when a bar simply cannot be curtailed
  • Read a detail the way a steel fixer will have to build it

Lessons

  1. Bar arrangement and effective depth

Where a design quietly loses capacity that no check will ever report.

  2. Crack control, cover and congestion

Three requirements that pull against each other, and the one with no code check at all.

Module summary
  • A correct calculation and a bad detail give an unsound structure
  • Bars in two layers have a smaller effective depth — use the CENTROID, not the top layer
  • That loss is silent: no strength check reports it
  • Crack control by diameter OR by spacing — either alone is sufficient
  • Cover fights crack control: more cover means wider surface cracks
  • Congestion has no code check; it is caught by looking, or on site
  • A bar often cannot be curtailed at all, and that is a legitimate answer
Teaching basis and review status

These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.

Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.

Check your understanding

Practice

A 350 mm wide beam has 40 mm cover and H10 links. What is the width available between the inside faces of the links, in mm?

Practice

Bars are arranged 3 at 60 mm from the tension face and 3 at 110 mm, in a 550 mm deep beam. What is the effective depth, in mm?

Check yourself

Which check would notice that a beam designed for one layer of bars was built in two?

Practice

Cover increases from 25 mm to 40 mm on a 500 mm deep beam with H8 links and H20 bars in one layer. By how much does the effective depth fall, in mm?

Check yourself

Why is there no code check for reinforcement congestion?

Practice

How many H32 bars fit in one layer in a 400 mm web with 40 mm cover and H10 links?
