Reinforced Concrete Design / module 16

An integrated design: one structure, end to end

Follow a consistent gravity-load example from slab to foundation, including the consequences of a depth change and the checks that still need project inputs.

What you will understand

  • Follow permanent and variable actions separately from slab to foundation
  • Count member self-weight once
  • Check actual reinforcement and the applicable span/depth model
  • Trace a section change through the downstream loads
  • Distinguish calculated checks from acceptance checks needing additional information

Lessons

  1. The load path, end to end

Every previous module answered a question about one member. This one follows the load from where it lands to where it stops.

  2. Every check, and the one that governs

Compare the checks that can be calculated, and state which acceptance decisions still need project information.

Module summary
  • The example carries two office floors and a roof with no imposed-load reduction
  • The beam take-down includes only its downstand self-weight
  • Use required steel and the flanged concrete area in the T-beam span/depth calculation
  • The initial 550 mm beam passes the illustrated checks;650 mm is an optional sensitivity study
  • The optional deepening adds 19.6875 kN characteristic permanent load at the column base
  • A foundation requires geotechnical and settlement verification in addition to these structural checks
  • The column combined bending and stability assessment remains open
Teaching basis and review status

These are educational models and exercises. Check their assumptions before using the results. The full technical content and every diagram have not yet been independently verified.

Concrete and steel calculations retain their stated first-generation Eurocode teaching basis. Use the standards and amendments specified for your project; do not mix generations without an appropriate design basis.

Practice

A 200 mm one-way slab spans 5.0 m and carries w = 14.63 kN/m². What is the design moment, in kNm per metre width?

Practice

A 650 mm deep beam has 35 mm cover, H10 links and H32 main bars in one layer. What is the effective depth, in mm?

Practice

A beam is 350 wide and 650 deep and sits under a 200 mm slab. What is its self-weight per metre, in kN/m?

Practice

For the revised option Gk =936.84375 kN and Qk =281.25 kN, with no imposed-load reduction. What characteristic column load reaches the pad, in kN?

Practice

A beam's effective flange width is 2780 mm and its web is 350 mm. By what factor does treating it as flanged rather than rectangular reduce K?

Practice

Among the revised option’s calculated ratios, pad service pressure is 0.9760, slab span/depth 0.9406 and all other reported ratios are lower. What is the largest reported utilisation?
