Support learning, ask useful questions and help identify development opportunities. Formal sign-off duties depend on the relevant institution and route.
Test the reasoning.
Ask what the engineer decided, why, what alternative they rejected, what they checked and who had authority. Encourage accurate language about responsibility.
Look for the next opportunity.
Discuss work that could develop a thin area of competence. Agree the support and review the engineer needs, then return to the evidence after the work is done.
