A weakness in a draft may reflect either missing experience or a poor account of existing competence. A mentor needs to distinguish between them; a tool cannot make that judgement for you.
Clarify the type of gap
A writing gap means the experience exists but the account leaves it unclear. Ask the candidate to explain the work and identify the missing detail.
An experience gap means the candidate has not yet done the relevant work. It needs a development opportunity and an agreed review point. Rewording the account cannot supply that experience.
Ask open questions
Ask “What did you have to weigh against what?” before suggesting possible constraints. Give the candidate time to explain their reasoning in their own words.
Check responsibility accurately
Ask who else contributed and who owned the decision. Help the candidate state their actual contribution, whether the original account overstated or understated it.
